Augustijn Von Alyn originally came to the U.S. from the Netherlands in 1869. At just 17 years old, speaking very little English and with only a few guilders to exchange, he began working on the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City. Eventually, he worked his way up to Foreman, which afforded him the opportunity to save money and start a family.

In 1883 Augustijn used his savings to purchase the tenement he had been sharing with his wife and three children on the Lower East Side. He continued to work during the day and would spend his evenings fixing up the rundown building. After several years, he leveraged his hard work into a loan to purchase another building. Augustijn continued doing this for 39 more years until he retired. 140 years later, the Von Alyn Family Trust has $5B+ in assets and over 100M sq ft of property.
